• can I check the coverage in my area?

Yes, our coverage checker lets you check coverage in up to six locations.

  • what’s the network coverage like in remote areas?

Currently, our network and T-Mobile’s network cover 98% of the UK population. By the end of 2014, we aim to cover 99.6%, so you’ll be able to use your phone almost anywhere.

  • why is my coverage poor when I’m inside?

The type of building you’re in can affect your coverage. For example, things like stone walls or insulation can impact your indoor signal strength. Also, the closer you are to a window, the better your signal will be.

  • what kind of things can affect my coverage?

Generally, the closer you are to a transmitter, the better your signal will be. However, coverage can be affected by things like surrounding buildings, network faults and even the weather.

  • do I need to change my settings to use 3G?

No. As long as your phone is capable of using 3G, it will pick it up automatically.

  • do I need a specific phone or SIM to use 3G?

You need a compatible phone or device to connect to our 3G network. You don’t need a 3G-specific SIM.

  • how will I know if I have 3G coverage?

When you’re on our 3G network, a tiny 3G symbol will appear on your phone’s homescreen.

  • will using 3G mean I hit my data limit faster?

3G doesn’t use more data than 2G. It simply loads the data faster. You may find that you use more data on your phone because it’s quicker and easier to load up your emails or Facebook, but 3G won’t actually use up more data.

  • how do I know whether my phone uses 2G or 3G?

If you’re not sure whether your phone uses 2G or 3G, please check on the manufacturer’s website.

  • what are the differences between 2G, 3G and 4G?

2G (second generation) is mainly used now for calls and texts. 3G is much faster, so it’s great for browsing, tweeting and checking Facebook. 4G hasn’t launched commercially in the UK yet, but it will mean super-fast and more reliable internet connections.

  • does smart signal sharing mean Orange and T-Mobile are now effectively one network?

No. We still run two different networks under two different brands. These improvements will help us to make sure we offer customers on both Orange and T-Mobile great, reliable coverage in more places.

  • will smart signal sharing affect my battery life, because my phone will always be searching for the best signal?

Having more coverage can improve battery life, but this improvement is offset by your phone searching for network. So your battery life shouldn’t really be affected – apart from the fact that you might use your phone more.
